Want to get involved?

PA Unplugged is working to shift how we approach technology in childhood and adolescence. This is work that requires many different voices: parents and teachers, medical and mental health providers, people from all across the political spectrum and every walk of life. No matter how much time you have to give, your involvement is important to us. Read about our advocacy below and fill out our interest form if you’d like to join us.

Local Advocacy

At the local level, PA Unplugged supports local parent groups advocating for change in schools and communities. Our priorities include:

  • Bell-to-bell phone-free schools (K–12): Require students to store phones — and potentially other personal devices — in a secure location from the start of the school day until dismissal, creating distraction-free learning environments.

  • Collective action to delay devices: Rally families around community-wide pledges to delay smartphone use until at least the beginning of high school.

  • Accountable and effective educational technology: Mandate thorough vetting of all digital tools and online platforms used in schools to ensure they are safe, effective, and compliant with privacy and data protection laws.

Statewide Advocacy

At the state level, PA Unplugged is supporting policies and legislation that address the broader digital environment. Our priorities include:

  • Phone-free schools: Statewide standards to support and expand bell-to-bell phone-free policies across K–12 schools.

  • Educational technology oversight: Requirements for schools to evaluate and ensure the safety, effectiveness, and data privacy of digital tools.

  • AI regulation: Policies to ensure the responsible use of artificial intelligence in educational and child-facing settings.

  • Social media guardrails and warning labels: Age verification, warning labels about risks of excessive use, and transparency requirements.

  • Kids’ online safety and app store accountability: Stronger protections for children’s data, age-appropriate design standards, and accountability measures for platforms and app stores.
